ââ¬Å"There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.â⬠[1] Everyone faces adversity in their lifetime, and how one deals with the issues is what sets one apart from the other. In Siddhartha and The Catcher in the Rye, both Holden and Siddhartha face a barrage of issues. These difficulties, if not dealt with, can be debilitating; however, if the victim tries to resolve them, the issues become obsolete. Holdenââ¬â¢s ever-present depression is mainly because he is segregated from society and is incredibly lonely. Holden feels as if nobody understands him and that he is not close to anyone, aside from phoebe. Siddhartha felt this at a low-pointy in his life too ââ¬Å"Only Kamala had been dear to him, only she was of value.â⬠[4] Holden is depressed the entire novel, unlike Siddhartha. Siddhartha saw what was causing his misery and chose to leave it behind and never look back. By removing the riches that plagued his life with grief, Siddhartha ended his cycle of sadness. Doing this allowed Siddhartha back into the world of happiness, and pushed him farther down the pass of enlightenment. Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion Essay Example For Students
Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion Essay Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion The Renaissance was known as a period of revival or rebirth of cultural awareness and learning that took place during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and, perhaps most of all, as an era of the individual. During the Renaissance, art was a branch of knowledge a way to showcase God and his creations, science, anatomy, discoveries and to inspire people to take pleasure in the world around them. Christian art during this period was produced to enhance the worship of saintly figures by church patrons. Paintings were used, not only to tell biblical stories, but to Oromo an emotional connection between patrons and the church. Artists during this period strives to portray events of religious importance with high drama to make a lasting impression. One such event was the crucifixion of Christ, a subject dealt with by many Renaissance artists. One of these artists, Topmast did Seer Giovanni De Simons Guide Cassia, better known as Mosaic, was perhaps the first great painter of the Italian renaissance. His innovations in the use of scientific perspective inaugurated the modern era in painting. Born in San Giovanni Volcano on December, 21, 1401, Mosaic was, to tote Libber De Libber the youngest of all painters who were young before, during and after him who, in his few youthful years, worked the miracle of awakening in painting, breathing life into it at least real and earthy, an urgency it had never had before. Because he created a turning point in the history of painting with his own work and because he was later followed by numerous painters of great distinction, Mosaic is almost unanimously considered to be the founder of renaissance art. Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion One of Mosaics most famous works is The Trinity, which was painted between 425 and 1428. It is an excellent example of Mosaics mastery of mathematical proportion in relation to scientific perspective. It consists of two levels of unequal height. Christ is represented on the top half in a coffer, barrel-vaulted chapel. On one side is the Virgin Mary, on the other, SST. John. The second level, underneath the alter, is a tomb containing a skeleton, which may represent Adam. The vanishing point between the two levels, which brings both views together, is the masonry alter positioned at the eye level of the spectator. By doing this, he has created the illusion of an actual structure. His use of scientific perspective is projected so accurately in terms of perspective principles (Frederick Hart. ) that, when first completed, it was thought that Brucellosis had actually done the painting, which shows us the powerful influence that Brucellosis must have had on Mosaic. Matthias Gerundial, the next artist whose work I liked, is considered one of the greatest German painters of his age. His works on religious themes achieve a century sources, Gerundial may have originally been named Matthias, Matthias or Mathis Goatherd-Neither, and was born in Wurge, perhaps in 1475. Greenswards achievement in the arts remains one of the most striking in the history of northern Europe. His 10 or so paintings and approximately 35 drawings that survive are jealously guarded and carefully scrutinized today. His dramatic and intensely expressive approach to his subject can best be observed in three of his paintings of the Crucifixion (in Basel, in Washington and in Karakuls). Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion Considered to be his masterpiece are the wings of the altarpiece of the Intonate monastery at Shimmed in southern Lace, dated to 1515. There are three views of the altarpiece. The first, with the wings closed, is a Crucifixion showing a harrowing detailed twisted and bloody fugue of Christ on the cross in the center, flanked on the left by the Madonna being comforted by John and a kneeling Mary Magdalene. On the right is John the Baptist pointing to the dying Savior. At Johns feet is a lamb holding a cross, the symbol of the Lamb of God, slaughtered for mans sins. .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d , .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .postImageUrl , .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d , .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:hover , .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:visited , .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:active { border:0!important; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:active , .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf68965950bbd33954471b39f575daf7d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Harlem Renaissance Short EssayThe second view, with the wings open, reveals three scenes of celebration. They are of Saints Paul and Antonym in the Desert and the Temptation of SST. Antonym. The Crucifixion is somber and livid, but the interior is all brilliant color and light. The final scenes of the Desert Saints are somewhat lurid and eerie, and the Temptation is a haunted vision of sin. While Gerundial was possibly a contemporary of Dere (who was deeply influenced by the Renaissance), Gerundial seemed to ignore it in his choices for subject matter and style. From his works that still survive, it is possible to see Gerundial as one of the most powerful of all painters. He reminds us that an artist an be very great without being progressive, as the greatness of art does not rest in new discoveries. Another artist, Rosier van deer Wedded, was considered to be one of the most influential northern European artists of this time. An deer Wedded was born in Outrun, Flanders in 1399 or 1400. He was know for his sensitive, deeply moving renderings of Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion religious themes. His influence was strong and widespread and in his own lifetime, his paintings were sent all over Europe. His emotional and dramatic style found more followers than other artists, such as Jan van Eyes. Rosier showed an increasing interest in the theme of Chrisms passion in the mid sasss. These were characterized by cold colors, rhythmic elongated lines, elegant mannered poses of figures and by a done in the sasss. In one such painting, the Crucifixion Triptych, a unified landscape scene links all three panels. A rectangular gold framework design occurs in this triptych that has the Crucifixion in the middle. You see the gestures of Mary, John and the grieving angels expressing strong emotions, as does the billowing cloak of SST. John and the ends of Chrisms loincloth, which swirls in the air. You also note the donors who have approached the cross. They are not to be seen as really a part of the Crucifixion scene, but present only in thought and prayer. The Crucifixion Triptych is impressive in its composition and the figures are executed to a very high standard, though they seem more abstract and graphic and less three-dimensional than those in some of Riggers other works. This, as with all of his religious paintings, was thought to be influenced by the writings of Thomas a Kemps, the most popular theologian of the era, who stressed the empathetic response to episodes from the lives of Mary, Christ ND the Saints. The final artist that I admired is Far Giovanni dad Fissile, known as Far Angelica. Far Angelica was most likely born between 1400 and 1402. For a good part of his life, he worked as an artist in the service of the Dominican Order. Eventually, Far Angelica Renaissance Depictions of the Crucifixion succeeded SST. Intoning as prior of San Marco. Even before his death, he was being extolled as the angelic painter. He was also called Beat (blessed) Angelica, an appropriate title due to his pious life and the devotion and sincerity of his religious work. Far Angelica was heavily influenced by Mosaic. Far Angelica was considered one of the most important painters of his day and, through him and others, we can see the new Renaissance style emerging. Far Angelicas earliest, fully Renaissance painting is his Descent from the Cross. This painting represents the first known successful Italian attempt to set a group of figures into a harmoniously receding landscape space rather than on the foreground, such as Mosaic did. In this painting, Far Angelica presents a world in which every shape is clear, every color bright and sparkling. The figures are united by their adoration of the sacred body. In his painting, you barely notice the bruises on Chrisms torso or the blood on his forehead. .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 , .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .postImageUrl , .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 , .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:hover , .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:visited , .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:active { border:0!important; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:active , .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652 .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucd83ec9e489b41ed4199a73826730652:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Art, Early, High and Italian Renaissance, TestYou are, instead drawn to his quiet face and the light that touches his lips, eyelids, arching brows and the silky surface of his hair and beard. Far Angelica was, according to all surviving evidence, the leading painter of Florence in the sasss. He is also credited with interpreting the conquests of Mosaic in a form that was a profound and lasting influence on Renaissance art. While all of these artists were truly great, Mosaic, despite his early death, is still looked upon as the paragon of illusion even as a forerunner to Michelangelo. He played a fundamental role in the history of art and helped lay the foundations for established art today.

Prose Criticism of Chuck Palahniuk Invisible Monsters Essay Example
Prose Criticism of Chuck Palahniuk Invisible Monsters Essay The purpose of the first few paragraphs of any novel is to set the basic scene, to introduce main characters, and most importantly to make the reader carry on reading! If one starts reading a book and is not gripped by some aspect of the story or characters within the first few pages, many will abandon it in favour of something more engaging. The opening of Invisible Monsters does all of these things and more. It is narrated by one of the main characters, and another two are introduced within the first few paragraphs. Here the narrator tells you quite openly, this is called scene setting: where everybody is, whos alive, whos dead. This sentence in itself prompts one to read on, if only to find out who is dead. In fact, the first paragraph asks a whole hoard of questions in the readers head: who is alive and dead? Who is Evie Cottrell? Who is the narrator? What happened to the rest of Evies wedding dress, and why is she holding a rifle? The story does not run in one straight chronological line, from beginning to end. In fact it is very jumbles and frequently jumps back and forth between past and present. So with the opening of the novel one is left wondering not only what happens next but also what happened before this, how did we get here? This technique is part of what keeps the reader turning the pages not only for the next part of the story but also the last part. Palahniuks style is unique in that, with only a small amount of words he can evoke a whole scene. In the first paragraph there are few adjectives. The wedding reception is big and in a big manor house. The staircase is also big. However, by the use of the language here the reader is able to grasp not only what the scene looks like but also some detail about the narrator and her somewhat limited vocabulary. The whole book is written in the style of a person telling the story verbally rather than writing it down, and the syntax and detail (including that which is omitted) are indicative of this. The piece is a collection of deconstructionist, self-referential stream-of-consciousness asides which affirm the idea of a person telling a story, adding detail as it occurs to them. This bits and pieces exposition builds tension and confusion throughout the book, but especially at the beginning, where information is slowly leaked to the reader. There us a symbiotic relationship between the frenetic style and the wildly unbalanced characters, which fit together perfectly. This allows Palahniuk to breathe more life into his characters than if he had rendered them in a more conventional way. The first character to be mentioned is Evie Cottrell; the scene is set at her wedding reception, and we meet her standing on a staircase, naked inside whats left of her wedding dress, still holding her rifle. The narrator does not seem at all sympathetic to Evie in her description, and in fact there is a certain amount of distaste in the way, further down the page, we are told, You can trace everything about Evie Cottrells look back to some television commercial for an organic shampoo suggesting that Evie is defined more by looks and her outer image than intelligence. The structure of this novel is very fragmented. Paragraphs are short and choppy in some cases only a few words and the non-linear narrative again enforces the superficiality of the characters. The writing is quite plain in its wording and there is little imagistic language (though Brandy is said to be gushing her insides out). The vocabulary is colloquial and varies sometimes using a few simple (some big West Hills wedding reception) and sometimes opting for more descriptive, intelligent words (give me rampant intellectualism as a coping mechanism). The repetition of the word big in the first paragraph is quite telling of the character of the narrator: there are many words that could be used to describe a wedding reception in the West Hills (beautiful, extravagant, luxurious) but all she seems or chooses to note is that it is, simply, big. The lack of descriptive detail here, when later on almost an entire paragraph is devoted to the cut and style of Brandy Alexanders suit is a lso very telling of the characters. The fact Brandy is bleeding g from a bullet wound is mentioned almost as an aside the hole in the suit has caused the single-breasted cut to become asymmetrical. This is where Palahniuk is very clever. He does not come out and say that his characters are vacuous and superficial as such, but the narrators choice of words and actions show us. For example, as Brandy Alexander is laying bleeding to death at our feet, our narrator remarks, my first instinct is maybe its not too late to dab club soda on the blood stain. Earlier in the piece, the narrator has also remarked that Shotgunning anybody in this room would be the moral equivalent of killing a car. Were all such products. A very existential comment in which she places herself in the same category as her two worst enemies and is aware that in a sense she is no better than them. Palahniuk has an interesting and quite original way of conveying his characters feelings. He never seems to write, I feel or she felt and so instead expresses the feelings of his characters in quite abstract ways. So where in Fight Club the narrator exclaimed, I am Joes Enraged, Inflamed sense of Rejection, in Invisible Monsters feelings are conveyed in keeping with the brainless images of the characters as calls from a photographer to his model: Give me malice. This is effective not only in that it allows the reader to see how the narrator feels without resorting to I feel (Which would be rather out of character for these people, but it also likens the whole scene to a photo shoot, making it seem that everyone is acting a part which, of course, they are. It begins the idea that all of these characters are fake and perhaps not what they seem, but rather hiding behind the models faà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ade of Give me In conclusion, this novel opening is very effective. It introduces the characters and scene is such a way that leaves the reader with numerous questions regarding not only the outcome of the present situation, but also how the situation came about. Who are these people? Why is the house on fire? Why is Evie half burned out of her dress and half way down the stairs with a rifle in her hand? Why did she shoot Brandy? And why is the narrator calmly thinking of dabbing club soda on the bloodstains? It certainly makes the reader want to turn the page to find out just what is going on in this rather twisted world we are being drawn into.
